    Design Basics

    Arts    Design

    November 19th, 2006 by Brian E. Young

I’m a big back to the basics guy. You’re never too advanced to brush up. I love to go back through rudimentary books and be amazed at what I’ve forgotten. And you know those people who think they know everything, they don’t go back and you see the glaring basic errors. You don’t want that to be you. My book recommendation for today is Design Basics by David A. Lauer & Stephen Pentak, continuing from my last book highlight in what’s supposed to be a series here.

This book is simply a very practical, guiding you through the world of 2D design. Usually when I have thoughts on a particular type of design, I look here. It’s pretty fun to see something like a grid applied to a book/magazine layout, then graphic art and then a fine art example. That;s the method in this one. I’ve had this book for 6 years and I’m still learning from it. The web is great, but the organization of a good book just has something for me.

For something on the web, check out the Rookie Designer podcast. Back to the basics of design. This one is career and goal oriented, trying to get you to miss those simple mistakes and making us all look that much more pro.
